Our history & our future
The Latino Education Foundation is now in its 5th year of existence. Its main objective is to make higher level education more accessible to graduating Latino high school students. We work closely with the WCSD, UNR and TMCC to provide financial assistance to those young Latino students that are emerging from our community with the determination to obtain a higher education. For as long as I have been working with the Foundation, I have observed the different challenges that these young ladies and young men have to face; nevertheless, they continue to break those barriers and overcome all types of obstacles to reach their goals. Although we would love to serve all high schools students within the community, we focus on the Latino population, due to the fact that they face obstacles that other majorities or minorities do not face, in the majority of cases they are the first ones in their families to get the opportunity to obtain a degree, their parents do not speak English, and at times their parents are struggling with deportations and legal procedures, parents holding two or more jobs to make ends meet, and caring for younger siblings, with limited time to concentrate on achieving their goals.
We offer scholarships to those students who, by all indications of their schools, family, church, employers, and others, are considered “well rounded” individuals with high academic achievement, actively involved in civic and community service activities and with solid personal goals. We are able to meet these obligations through the generosity of a number of sponsors within the community, but it is common knowledge, that at present all or most donations have come to a halt or diminished. We would like to invite you to get involved, get the facts and become one of our benefactors, you could make dreams come true and assist in creating many future leaders, and thus enhance the living standard throughout our community.
Thank you,
Franklin Peralta, President
