UNR College of Business wants your input!
Dear Professional:
Faced with many changes in our national and regional economies, we'd like to hear from you about your perceptions of the business climate in the Sierra region.
The Center for Regional Studies at UNR College of Business, in partnership with InfoSearch International, is conducting a semi-annual survey of regional business leaders. One important result of the survey is the Economic Outlook Index (EOI) that measures and tracks changes in the region's economic outlook over time.
The survey contains questions about current events and hot topics, including the state's tax structure and budget deficits, immigration reform, and additional regulations/legislation. We believe responses to these questions will be of significant importance to the business community and may help influence key decision makers.
Typical survey participants include senior-level business executives, members of economic development authorities, and chambers of commerce in the Sierra region. This year we are expanding our participants to include the broader geographic region and top leaders of local governments.
You have been identified as a key contributor to knowing the needs and issues of businesses in the area. Your participation in this project is critical to business and economic development efforts in the region. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by clicking on the link below.

Driving for Donors IV Summer Promotion - Win a 2010 Toyota Corolla!
United Blood Services of Reno will be offering all presenting donors the chance to enter a raffle to win a beautiful 2010 Toyota Corolla courtesy of the Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers starting on Tuesday, June first and running throughout the summer until Sunday, September 5th.
“We are offering our donors a chance to win a 2010 Toyota Corolla as our way of keeping the need for blood donations high during the critical summer months when blood donations are typically low due to schools being out for the summer and everyone’s busy schedules,” said Steve Thomas who is the Donor Recruitment Director for UBS - Reno. “This is especially important given hospital patients in Northern Nevada continue to need blood every day for blood transfusions due to advancements in the medical field coupled with 69,000,000 baby boomers rapidly changing from being blood donors to becoming blood recipients,” continued Thomas.
“Driving for Donors I, II and III enabled us to have the three most successful summers ever,” said Lisa Rogers who is the Donor Recruitment Supervisor for UBS – Reno. “We are very optimistic our Driving for Donors IV summer promotion will be even more successful,” Rogers continued.
This key summer campaign is very important to our community’s hospital patients in need of a blood transfusion since it will ensure UBS – Reno has a sufficient quantity of blood donations this summer to meet all community hospital demand. United Blood Services of Reno needs about 150 blood donors each day to meet the increasing need for blood transfusions in our community.
“The summer is almost upon us and our community’s need for blood is as strong as ever,” said Rogers. “You can help to save a life by donating blood today,” added Rogers.
United Blood Services of Reno is the sole blood products supplier to 20 hospitals in northern Nevada and they need approximately 150 blood donations every day to meet the increasing demand for their three principal blood products that are red blood cells, platelets and plasma.

ADP Invites You to a Semimar on Labor, Employment, & Business Law
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Tamarack Junction Casino
13101 S Virginia St., Reno, NV 89511
Today's uncertain economic climate has driven many organizations to implement cost-cutting measures - like staff reductions - to help protect and grow their bottom line. Yet at the same time, an increase in employee lawsuits, coupled by a spike in Department of Labor investigations aimed at pursuing perceived legal violations by employers, can have an adverse impact both on growth and reputation if not proactively managed.
In fact, in recent months, lawsuits against employers have resulted in millions of dollars of fines and judgments. That's why it's important that employers educate themselves on how to identify and avoid labor related risks which can compromise overall profitability and business reputation.
With this in mind, you are invited to an upcoming information-packed seminar where subject matter experts from the law office of Holland & Hart will discuss a range of relevant issues pertinent to labor, employment and business law. We also invite you to submit a few questions you would like to have the attorneys respond to during the seminar (see registration page). We also plan on opening up the presentation to Q&A so that you can ask the attorneys about your unique questions and labor-related items.

- Anthony L. Hall, Partner, Reno Office
- Dora V. Lane, Associate, Reno Office

RENOWN HEALTH ANNOUNCES RENOWN INSTITUTE FOR ROBOTIC SURGERY
Renown Health is pleased to announce the creation of the Renown Institute for Robotic Surgery, a new institute that will continue the exceptional surgical care provided to patients. As a part of the institute, medical team members will provide clinical research, consumer education and patient care for a variety of minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Robotic surgery applies a surgeon’s skill to computer-enhanced technology. By enhancing surgical capabilities, the system helps to improve clinical outcomes for patients across many disciplines. Patient benefits with the da Vinci include faster recovery with less pain, discomfort, and blood loss and a quicker return to normal activities. Among all these benefits, patients can receive care close to home.
In 2008, Renown was the first to bring the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to northern Nevada for physician-assisted robotic surgery. Today, the organization’s dedication to skill, expertise and technology allows it to provide a world-class institute for patients and surgeons in Reno and the surrounding region.
With two da Vinci systems, Renown Health has been able to expand initial specialties of gynecologic oncology, urology and heart to include gastroenterology, lung and gynecology, to name a few.
The Renown Institute for Robotic Surgery is championed by a steering committee including local surgeons Peter Lim, MD, medical director, Angelo Kanellos, MD, Athan Roumanas, MD, Christos Galanopoulos, MD, and John Ganser, MD. These surgeons, along with more than 10 others, work alongside the skilled surgical team at Renown Regional Medical Center.
In addition to the new institute, Renown has been recognized as a top institution for physician training. Earlier this year, Renown Regional Medical Center announced that it has become one of only 11 institutions across the country to use da Vinci Connect, an online training tool that allows surgeons to view surgeries remotely. The da Vinci Connect system is designed to aide in the training and proctoring of physicians who are working to become a certified da Vinci surgeon. For more information on treatment availability, visit renown.org/davinci.

RENOWN HEALTH TO RECOGNIZE DR. WILLIAM DAWSON WITH THE ARTHUR J. LURIE DISTINGUISHED PHYSICIAN AWARD
William Dawson, M.D., co-founder of Sierra Neurosurgery Group, will be honored by Renown Health at Magic 2010, this year’s inaugural Renown Health Foundation gala benefiting Renown Children’s Hospital. Dr. Dawson, along with fellow neurosurgeon Joseph Walker, founded Sierra Neurosurgery Group in 1980. He retired in April 2010 after more than 30 years of practice. His legacy includes the oldest and one of the largest continuously operating neurosurgery groups in the region benefitting hundreds of patients.
The gala is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, and will be an evening filled with music, magic and stories of miracles that occur daily at Renown Children’s Hospital. The program also includes the presentation of the Arthur J. Lurie Distinguished Physician Award, honoring Dr. Dawson and the genuine difference his work has made in the community.
“It is a great honor to present the Arthur J. Lurie Distinguished Physician Award to Dr. Dawson,” said Jim Miller, president and CEO of Renown Health. “His skilled hands and expert patient care will be missed throughout the northern Nevada medical community.”
With a medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Dawson completed his surgical internship at Emory University and Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Over the last 30 years Dr. Dawson has made a considerable impact on the northern Nevada medical community. In addition to helping bring a variety of skilled physicians to the area, he has worked tirelessly with hospital staff to ensure each one of his patients received the best care possible.
“Dr. Dawson was always very generous with his time and would do everything he could for his patients,” said Tim Blakely, director of X-ray and imaging services at Renown Regional Medical Center. “He was directly involved, no matter what time of day or night. As one of the first neurosurgeons in the community, Dr. Dawson offered a tremendous level of skill and compassion to those patients who needed his help.”
Dr. Dawson has helped patients of all ages, including pediatric patients at Renown Children’s Hospital. As part of his work bringing physicians to the area, Dr. Dawson helped bring Michael Edwards, M.D., pediatric neurosurgeon to Reno. With this year’s gala focused on Renown Children’s Hospital, Dr. Dawson said he has much praise for the staff in Renown’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
People interested in attending Magic 2010 can contact the Renown Health Foundation at 775-982-5545. All proceeds from the event will benefit Renown Children’s Hospital.
